Today's Featured Post

Saturday

PCMECH has been been around a long time. We now have almost 3,300 published posts here at PCMECH. We started out very focused on computer hardware and how it works. We progressed into how-to. Sites then sprung up around the Internet talking about this topic. We evolved into a blog where, today, we are now publishing several new posts on a daily basis. Essentially, we’re now publishing in one day what we USED to do in a week or more.

Anyway, due to the high volume of information we post, I thought I would take a little time to highlight some of our best stuff in the last month.

21 Windows Apps - JKDefrag

JKDefrag is a file defragmentation utility for Windows. It is free and very ugly-looking but does the job very, very well. When you download this application it doesn’t get any easier as far as ease-of-use is concerned. There is nothing to install. Just double-click the JKDefrag.exe executable file and it starts doing its thing. This [...]

Memory Is Ultra Cheap. Why Not Add More?

Last week I upgraded one of our laptops from 1 GB to 2 GB of memory for the whopping cost of $25. The memory was nothing special, just a single 1 GB DDR2 laptop stick. Considering the price of the most common type of memory is so cheap right now, why not double your RAM? [...]

Day 10: Information Products: The Gem of Making Money Online

One thing this 30 day series will make clear by the time it is complete is that there are many ways to generate an income online. However, there is no better way (in my opinion) than selling information.
People go online in the first place to gain information. They want to learn about something. They have [...]

11 Tips For Easy Product Returns

We all know that when you buy some software, a gadget, a piece of hardware or anything else, it is nice to know you can return it should there be a problem and (hopefully) get your money back. However, being a smart consumer means understanding the issue from the retailer’s perspective, too.
Here are some tips [...]

Quick YouTube Tip For Videomakers

Periodically I get asked how to get videos uploaded to YouTube to look better. The easiest possible way to do this is to simply capture/import and export your video file as 640×480 resolution for great video quality.
Here’s a quick tutorial for those who use Windows Movie Maker:
Import at 640×480
If you are importing from a camcorder, [...]

Easily Maintain A Mirrored Directory Structure

At work, I have a network location set up and have pointed each user’s ‘My Documents’ folder to a folder with their name on this server. The benefit to this is I can backup just a single location nightly and it includes each user’s documents in the backup automatically. Of course, users love to put [...]

Day 9: Concepts in Ecommerce Explained

In Day 8, I talked about the basics of finding a product to sell. If you are going this route, you are getting into the world of ecommerce. Life In The Slow Lane By Choice - Dial-Up Internet

A recently conducted study has proven that those who choose to use dial-up internet (yes, the agonizingly slow method of getting online) do more so by choice rather than lack of choice.
Explained: There are more than a few people out there (35% of all dial-uppers in the USA - a huge chunk) that just don’t [...]

Keeping Up With Technology’s Fast Pace

Do you feel way behind when it comes to technology? Do you find that most tech sites are throwing terms around that you’ve never heard of? You’re not alone.
Some people (like myself) follow this stuff full time. We’re early adopters and we’ve generally tried something and gotten bored with it by the time the [...]

21 Windows Apps - Windows Live Writer

If there is any be-all/end-all blog writing utility out there that classifies as the best, it’s Windows Live Writer. For all the bungling that Microsoft does with its other products, WLW is one that actually shines and does so very well.
Why is this? Because it does what any good blog authoring tool should do - [...]

Day 8: Buying and Selling Products Online

Buying low and selling high. It has been a basic concept of business since the beginning of time. And the concept doesn’t change when moved to the Internet. Most of the sellers on Ebay are making their money doing exactly this. They buy a product at one price and then resell it on Ebay at [...]

Don’t Make Me Think

Don’t Make Me Think is a book about web usability. It’s an older book but required reading for anyone who designs web sites. In a nutshell it states that if you want a successful web site, make it stupidly easy to use. Go complicated are it’s nothing but a big ball of fail.
In the world [...]

Managing Bookmarks in Firefox 3 With Tags

Firefox 3 was recently released by Mozilla and they broke a world record in doing so for the most downloads in a 24 hour period. There is a reason the browser is so popular: it is flexible and well thought out.

The Ultimate Windows Password Recovery Tool

While trying to recover a long forgotten SQL password and exhausting the common/typical password selections, I had the need to seek a recovery utility (I couldn’t reset the password as a certain application depends on the current value). Clean Your Keyboard, Seriously

Recent studies have shown that your keyboard is probably harboring more germs and bacteria than your toilet seat. This actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it. Most of us probably do everything from eating to blowing our nose without ever washing our hands before we start typing away.
There is no need [...]
